Not paying attention on the drive back from the Katowice airport this morning, I took a wrong turn. Came upon this thing of beauty where someone once lived. It’s only about 2 miles from The Palace at Naklo. Another local treasure. – KR

Less than 48 hours, but we packed in a lot of fun. With Jordan and Karen Oxford Welsh Wednesday night at our favorite local Italian restaurant; and Thursday on a whirlwind tour of various sites in Krakow. Up at 4 Friday morning to catch their flight back to London. – KR

The grand old sister

Just before Easter we got the chance to tour the interior of the Dembiński Palace in nearby Szczekociny — the first time we’d seen it from the inside in the ten years since we moved to Naklo. “Sister” to The Palace at Naklo, the Szczekociny estate was developed at roughly the same time — between 1770-1780 — with both projects under the direction of the architect Jan Ferdynand Nax. The tour was on the occasion of a visit from the Halpert family of Vancouver, and thanks to local historian Marek Gradoń, who wrangled the key. – KR

The usual guest showed up for the holiday. He’s The Doctor (medical), Lt. Col. Kazimierz Masłowski (ret.), Polish Army — the one in the middle on the left side. We were also graced for four days with the presence of Pan Henryk (left) and his delightful wife Pani Teresa (right), from Knurów near Gliwice. At the far end of the table, my in-laws, Tadeusz and Danuta. – KR

Neighbors from Vancouver

The Halpert-Creelmans visited this week from Vancouver, returning to tour the old family estate — the nearby Palace at Szczekociny, which was owned by the Halpert family pre-WWII. We refer to it as the “big sister” of the Palace at Nakło, as the two estates were developed at roughly the same time between 1770 and 1780 under the architect Jan Ferdynand Nax.
